Climate Change Reporting

As the world faces a Climate Emergency, institutions of learning such as colleges and universities have a responsibility to take a leadership role in decarbonisation of campuses, model sustainable practices and policies, and equip learners with the skills and knowledge to be successful in a changing world. Glasgow Kelvin College has been a leader in community development and engagement. To ensure a just transition, where all members of the Glasgow community are equipped to deal with the impacts of climate change, Glasgow Kelvin College is in a unique position to build more resilient communities and residents.

As a Further Education institution, the College’s Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) includes multiple commitments to increase Green Job training, deliver a comprehensive climate literacy curriculum, and support behavioural and societal change.   Glasgow Kelvin is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions towards achieving Net Zero, as well as providing support for those being affected by the climate transition.

The College is striving to contribute towards the Scottish Government targets of reducing emissions by 42% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. The Climate Change Action Plans (CCAP) of Glasgow Kelvin College outline plans that will reduce the College, measured carbon footprint.

The reports provide a baseline carbon footprint calculation for each academic year. The College has included all its energy consumption and water consumption relating to its four main campus buildings. It has also sought to measure carbon emissions from staff business travel. It has also calculated the carbon emissions from its own vehicle fleet and use of taxis.

Glasgow Kelvin College submits its Climate Change Report to the Scottish Government, as all public bodies are required to do annually.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In early 2018, Glasgow Kelvin College became the first to sign the Sustainable Development Goals Accord. The Accord is the collective response of the College and University Sectors to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The College has signed the Accord to express its commitment to environmental sustainability, and to highlight the work being done as part of our Climate Change Action Plan.

There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals) in the Accord, which are a universal call to take action and help end poverty, protect and preserve our planet, and ensure that everyone enjoys and lives life in peace and prosperity.

Education has a critical role in delivering learning and action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the College is at the beginning of its journey in helping to achieve this.

There are already a number of exciting projects that have started around the College, which acknowledge the importance of environmental sustainability, and also help towards bringing about change for good and benefit to the wider community.
