Course overview

Our unique January-start short course 'Fashion Design with Costume' not only provides an excellent grounding in the ever-expanding costume industry but also provides opportunities for progression to our higher-level courses such as HNC Costume and HND Fashion Design.

Over the past 10 years Scotland has grown its connections within film and TV on a global scale and more jobs within the industry are now available as a result. This course will give you the skills needed to progress your career in the costume industry. You will learn about theatrical design, how to construct patterns for creating costumes from scratch, as well as learning the art of millinery, covering important techniques such as surface decoration, and learning sewing machine skills.

What you will learn

Here are just some of the skills this NQ course will cover:

  • Theatrical Design
  • Industrial Machine Sewing Skills
  • Garment Pattern Construction
  • Costume Design and Production
  • 3D Skills Development (Millinery)

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview and candidates are expected to show evidence of their interest in the subject. This may include a folio of work showing fashion designs, art work or garments you have made or customised.

Future prospects

This course could lead to our corsetry or millinery evening classes, or to our HNC in Fashion Design with production and retail.

It could also help to build your portfolio for application to BA(Hons) Performance Costume at Edinburgh College of Art or BA Production Arts and Design at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
