Do you want to make a difference, represent student voices, and shape the future of Glasgow Kelvin College?

Nominations for Student President (2025-26) open on Monday, 28th April and run for two weeks. Elections will take place from Tuesday, 27th May – Friday, 30th May.

📌 What Does a Student President Do?

As a Student President, you will:

  • Represent the Student Body – Be the voice of your fellow students in important decisions.
  • Work with College Leadership – Sit on the Board of Management and help shape policies and improvements.
  • Lead Student Activities – Organise events, promote student welfare, and drive learner engagement.
  • Gather the Student Voice – Collect feedback through surveys, focus groups, class representatives and open forums like Meet the Managers.

📅 Key Dates

  • Nominations Open: Monday, 28th April 2025 (for two weeks)
  • Hustings (Candidate Speeches): Dates to be confirmed – A chance to meet candidates and hear their ideas!
  • Voting Period: Tuesday, 27th May – Friday, 30th May 2025
  • Results Announced: Shortly after voting closes

Follow these simple steps to stand for election:

  1. Check Your Eligibility – Any current student at Glasgow Kelvin College can stand.
  2. Submit Your Nomination – Complete a nomination form (available soon – check back here).
  3. Create a manifesto – Let your fellow students know what you are passionate about and what your intentions are if you were successful.
  4. Prepare for Hustings – Share your ideas and plans with fellow students.
  5. Campaign & Connect – Use posters, social media, and class visits to share your message.
  6. Get Ready to Lead! – If elected, you’ll receive training and support to succeed.

📚 Support & Training for Candidates

We are committed to helping you succeed. If you stand for election, you will receive:

  • Briefing Sessions – Understand the role, responsibilities, and how you can make a difference.
  • Training sessions from NUS and Sparqs – Connect with fellow Presidents from colleges throughout Scotland and learn more about representation.
  • Skills Development – Learn how to represent the student voice and engage with college leadership.
  • Induction Programme (if elected) – Including:
    • Introduction to College Structure
    • HR Input on Staff Policies
    • Board Member Expectations
    • Prioritising and Managing Ideas

❓ FAQs

Who can run for Student President?

Any current student at Glasgow Kelvin College is eligible to apply.

What is the time commitment?

There are 2 roles: one full time (35 hours per week) and one part-time (17.5 hours per week).

If elected, the term of office shall be from 1st July 2025 until 30th June 2026. Elected officers cannot hold office as Student President for more than 2 years in total, with re-election at the end of year 1.

The roles requires regular student engagement and representation throughout the academic year, including attendance at Board meetings and Student Association activities.

Can I get support if I’m unsure about running?

Absolutely! We offer briefing sessions to guide you through the process and answer your questions.

How will I be trained if I’m elected?

You will receive a comprehensive induction programme covering college structures, staff policies, and leadership responsibilities.

How do I vote?

Voting will be open from Tuesday, 27th May – Friday, 30th May 2025. Details on how to vote will be shared closer to the date.
