About Kirsty
Kirsty Alcorn
Access to Paramedic Science SWAP student
I'm Kirsty Alcorn, I'm 31 and started doing the Access to Paramedic Science course in August 2023.
I left school at 17 and have worked in customer facing roles since I left. Before starting this course I was a manager for a bookmakers, but I have since dropped down to be a cashier to give me more time to focus on my studies.
I decided to do the course because I have always wanted to be a paramedic, but I struggled academically in high school. I never believed I would be able to pursue this dream until I found this course. I joined the course because I believe I am in a better position now to be able to thrive in an academic environment and this course will give me the academic units to be able to attend university.
I chose to come to Glasgow Kelvin College because they had the better experience of providing the course.
The Access course has helped me get back into the mindset of writing academically. It has also showed me what will be expected of me at university.
So far, my favourite part of the course has been meeting my fellow classmates. I feel like we have a good group of people on my course and we help each other when we are struggling. It also helps having a group that you’re able to have a laugh with during the difficult moments of the course.
Once the course if finished I intend on going on to university to continue my studies towards being a paramedic.
If I had any advice or pointers for people thinking of going back to education it would be - Go for it! I was hesitant to apply at first but you’ll never know if you don’t try.
