About Andrew

Andrew Parfitt

ESOL Lecturer

Andrew has been teaching ESOL in Further Education colleges in Glasgow since 2011.  Before that he worked in humanitarian relief and development in Africa, South Asia and Central Asia.  After 7 years doing this, he decided to settle back in the UK and, wanting to continue helping displaced people, decided that teaching the vital skill of English language was the best way to do this.  He gained the Trinity CertTESOL qualification in 2010 and has taught in community venues and colleges in Glasgow ever since.

He has worked in a wide variety of ESOL projects for displaced people with partners such as the Red Cross,  Scottish Refugee Council and Glasgow City Council.  He gained a Professional Development Award in Teaching  in Further Education in 2014. He has previously co-ordinated the Glasgow ESOL Network Project, a city- wide project to assess ESOL learners' language levels and find them appropriate classes, and retains a keen interest in the initial assessment of learners.

Andrew enjoys the challenge of adapting teaching and learning to the ever-changing needs of ESOL learners in Glasgow.  He says that no 2 years in ESOL are ever the same - every year is a different mix of different students, different countries of origin, different abilities and different first languages - but they'll always find a home in a Kelvin ESOL class.
