Hedgehog Friendly Campus Award

Glasgow Kelvin College has been accredited as a Bronze Level Hedgehog Friendly Campus!

'Hedgehog Friendly Campus' is a UK-wide award scheme funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Hedgehog populations in the UK are in rapid decline, with the rural population having decreased 30-70% since 2000, and in 2020 they were put on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable to extinction in Great Britain.

What does this look like for the College? We are undertaking several projects and initiatives as part of the campaign:

  • We have a Hedgehog Friendly Campus working group (email SShea@glasgowkelvin.ac.uk to get involved!)
  • A bonfire awareness campaign—please remember to check your bonfires for hedgehogs before lighting
  • Information about hedgehogs available to read on campus
  • A British Hedgehog Preservation Society fundraising pot is available on campus at Springburn
  • Hedgehog Hazards and Hedgerow Audits of all three campuses, and a wider hedgehog survey
  • Hedgehog houses will be put on campus, as well as a bug house
  • Stickers for strimmers and mowers to remind staff to check for hedgehogs before using equipment
  • Taking part in the ‘Big Hog-Friendly Litter Pick Challenge’
  • Information about hedgehogs available to read online @SustainGKC
