Course overview

This course will provide you with the confidence and skills required to become a craft apprentice in Carpentry & Joinery or other areas with construction.

The course aims are to improve employability prospects by developing the following.

  • Carpentry & Joinery practical knowledge and skills.
  • Intro units in Bricklaying, Roofing and Painting
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Transferable skills that can be related to areas within the construction industry.
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills (CV assistance)

Carpentry & Joinery units:

  • Carpentry and Joinery: An Introduction
  • Develop Bench Joinery Skills
  • Manufacture Joinery Components
  • Carpentry and Joinery Repair and Maintenance

Other trade introduction units in

  • Bricklaying
  • Roofing
  • Painting
  • Construction Occupation Practices

Entry requirements

The course has no formal entry requirements, but you should have a genuine interest in carpentry & joinery and other areas within construction and you should be aiming to gain a craft apprenticeship within the construction industry when you complete your course.

This is also a female only course, to promote women into construction.

For this course, if English is not your first language

  • you need to have SQA ESOL National 5 (or equivalent, click here to see equivalent qualifications)
  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment here at the College.

The course will be delivered via blended learning using classroom and online activities along with practical workshop activities.
