Course overview

Strengthen your scientific knowledge and prepare for advanced study in Biology and Chemistry.

This one-year course offers a supportive and structured route into higher-level science qualifications. It’s designed for learners who have already achieved National 5 qualifications and are ready to progress to Higher-level (SCQF 6) study across the main scientific disciplines.

You’ll explore Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computing, and Communication, developing both theoretical and practical skills through engaging experiments and investigations. The course helps you identify your scientific strengths while building confidence for further study at HNC or HND level.

With dedicated tutor support and a hands-on approach to learning, this programme is the ideal bridge between school or NQ study and higher education in the sciences.

This course is ideal for:

  • Learners who’ve completed NQ Steps into Science (Level 5) or hold National 5 qualifications
  • Adults or school-leavers who want to move toward HNC/HND Applied Science or university-level study.
  • Those who enjoy practical experiments, lab work, and analytical thinking.
  • Students seeking a clear and supported route into professional or academic science pathways.

What you will learn

You’ll study a range of topics and skills that prepare you for higher-level qualifications:

  • Biology – human and plant systems, cellular biology, and genetics.
  • Chemistry – atomic structure, bonding, reactions, and analysis.
  • Physics – motion, energy, and the physical laws that govern the natural world.
  • Mathematics – problem-solving, equations, and data interpretation for scientific study.
  • Computing – using digital tools and software to support research and analysis.
  • Communication & Study Skills – effective scientific writing, research, and presentations.
  • Investigation Skills – planning and carrying out experiments, analysing results, and reporting findings.

The programme includes continuous feedback and one-to-one support to help you track your progress throughout the year.

Entry requirements

✅ Minimum of four National 5 qualifications (or equivalent), at grade C, in Maths, English Chemistry and Biology

✅ You must have a genuine interest in science and enthusiasm for hands-on learning.

✅ Entry is competitive, based on a review of your application and personal statement.

Personal Statement Guidance

Your personal statement should:

  • Explain why you want to study science and what interests you most about the subject.
  • Describe any school, work, or personal experience that shows your curiosity or ability in scientific study.
  • Highlight your skills - teamwork, motivation, organisation, and attention to detail - with examples.

A clear, well-written personal statement will improve your chance of being shortlisted for interview (in person or online).

Additional Information

When you start the course, your academic background will be reviewed to ensure you’re on the most suitable pathway. If additional support is needed, staff may suggest an alternative route to help you succeed.

ℹ️ For this course, if English is not your first language

  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.

Career Opportunities

This course builds the foundation for careers and future study in:

🔬 Laboratory Science and Research

🏥 Healthcare and Medical Support

🌿 Environmental or Conservation Work

⚙️ Engineering and Technology

💡 STEM Education and Technical Roles

You’ll gain practical and analytical skills that employers and universities value across science and technical industries.

Future prospects

After successfully completing this course, you may progress to:

  • HNC Applied Science at Glasgow Kelvin College (internal applicants are prioritised)
  • HND Applied Science or Biomedical Science
  • Other STEM-based qualifications or vocational routes in higher education

Many students who complete this level progress to HNC/HND, and then on to degree programmes or well-paid jobs in science, healthcare, or engineering sectors across Scotland and beyond.
