Course overview

This vibrant and rigorous HND Musical Theatre programme offers immersive, practical training in Acting, Voice, Singing, Dance, and Movement, preparing you for a wide range of opportunities in the performing arts industry. Guided by our industry-experienced faculty, you will develop both creative and technical skills through individual and collaborative projects which prepares you for transition into the working industry in a variety of capacities. In the HND program you will further develop your creative and performance skills, & work on a variety of creative and prescriptive projects. If you are passionate about working as a Musical Theatre Performer, Stage Actor, Voice Artist, Teacher/Educator, Professional & Community Arts Theatre practitioner, we would encourage you to apply for this full-time program.

The Performing Arts faculty at Kelvin work closely with Platform Theatre, where some of our bi-annual productions are staged. Furthermore, we collaborate with industry professionals who will deliver industry relevant workshops, providing you with current industry insights and connections. Furthermore, you will experience an intensive run on our professional festive production, working with an external director, MD, Actors, Choreographer, Costume department and Theatre Technicians.

Our Musical Theatre graduates articulate on some of the most renowned Schools and Conservatoire programs in the U.K. Our graduates also go on to work in a variety of professional capacities ranging from Community Arts through to Performing in West End productions. Many of our graduates can be found in current West End runs, UK Tours, Cruise Ships productions, Film/TV work, Directing/Writing work, Arts Facilitation work and Education.

This course is highly practical and physically demanding, with activities such as conditioning work, jumps, leaps, turns, lifting, supporting, partnering, floor based activities and intensive movement work integral to the curriculum. A good level of stamina and physical capability is essential for successful participation.

The criteria for some units, particularly in Dance and Movement, are determined by the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) and cannot be modified.

Entry requirements

Entry is by audition only.

Applicants must have a minimum of 1 Higher preferably in English or Drama. Alternatively, successful completion of an NC or NQ Acting program will also be considered.

Applicants looking to enter into year 2 of our program must have successfully completed a HNC in Musical Theatre.

Entry onto the course is by audition. The audition process will require you to take part in a group workshop where we can look at your skills in Dance, Singing and Acting. This is also an opportunity for you to find out more about our program, teaching staff and learn if this program is a good fit for your ambitions.

For this course, if English is not your first language

  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.

Career Opportunities

You can transition into the Musical Theatre industry in a range of capacities including, but not exclusively; Musical Theatre Actor, Production creative, Film/TV work, Writing, Directing, Dancer/Choreographer, Cruise Ship Performer, Entertainments Team, Community Theatre, Education and Arts Facilitator.

Future prospects

You can progress onto further study at HND and BA level, with UHI Perth, at Kelvin or a wide range of other Universities

Our Environment

Throughout the courses, our students are often involved in dance, acting, singing and movement performances that focus on climate related activities.

We re-purposes wood and materials for building sets and props and upcycle costumes from our many performances
