Designed for beginners, NQ Level 5 Hairdressing: An Introduction gives you the chance to build core skills, explore your creativity, and develop salon-ready confidence. Working in our real, fully equipped salons, you'll learn the essential techniques that professional stylists use every day – from shampooing and blow-drying to styling long hair and basic cutting.

Alongside your practical training, you’ll develop a digital portfolio that showcases your progress and creativity – helping you stand out in today’s fast-moving, social-media-driven industry.

You’ll also benefit from exclusive training with industry leaders, including L’Oréal, GHD, and other major brands, gaining industry-recognised certificates through workshops and online learning.

Work experience with one of our community or industry partners is a compulsory and valuable part of the course. This will help you build confidence, communication skills, and real-world salon experience.

Entry requirements

  • Must be 16 year or over at the course start date.
  •  A genuine interest and enthusiasm for the Hair industry is an advantage.
  • If you don’t meet entry requirements, you may be directed to other College courses.

For this course, if English is not your first language

  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.

Future prospects

Successful learners will have the opportunity to progress onto the next 18-week NQ Level 5 Progression in Hairdressing, where you’ll advance your practical and creative skills, preparing for further training or employment in the industry.
