Build your English skills and prepare for your next step in college, work, or further education.

Our ESOL Youth Progression courses are for students aged 16–19 who want to improve their English for everyday life, study, and future learning. Alongside English, some courses also include numeracy, ICT, employability, and science units.

We offer four Youth Progression pathways at different levels, designed to support your English development and help you move confidently from school to college study:

  • ESOL: Intro to Further Education (SCQF Level 2)
  • ESOL: Entry to Further Education (SCQF Level 3)
  • ESOL with Core Skills (SCQF Level 4)
  • ESOL with STEM (SCQF Level 5)

Each course focuses on building strong communication, digital, and study skills in a friendly and supportive learning environment.

This course is ideal for:

  • Young people aged 16–19 whose first language is not English
  • Learners moving on from school who want to study at college
  • Students who want to gain SQA qualifications in English and core skills
  • Those planning to move into vocational training or further education

What you will learn

All Youth Progression students will:

  • Improve speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
  • Develop grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation
  • Strengthen study and digital skills for future college courses
  • Build teamwork, problem solving, and employability skills
  • Complete SQA ESOL qualifications at their level

Each course includes specific subjects and units:

ESOL: Intro to Further Education (SCQF Level 2)

Focus on English for daily communication and the transition from school to college.

  • Employability 
  • SQA ESOL National 2

ESOL: Entry to Further Education (SCQF Level 3)

Build confidence in English and prepare for further education or training.

  • Study & Digital Skills 
  • Employability 
  • SQA ESOL National 3

ESOL with Core Skills (SCQF Level 4)

Develop English along with key skills for study and work, including ICT and numeracy.

  • SQA ESOL National 4

ESOL with STEM (SCQF Level 5)

Combine English with science, digital, and numeracy skills to prepare for further study or vocational courses.

  • SQA ESOL National 5
