Glasgow Kelvin College: Leading the Way with the Green Academy
Glasgow Kelvin College has launched its Green Academy, a pioneering initiative that serves as both a physical learning hub and a strategic approach to integrating "green" skills across a wide range of disciplines. The Green Academy is designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to thrive in a green economy while fostering sustainable practices in industry.
At the heart of the Green Academy are the Engineering workshops at the Springburn Campus, where students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, including ground and air source heat pumps, as well as solar energy systems. They are trained in the installation and maintenance of these technologies, preparing them to not only enter the workforce with advanced, in-demand skills but also to play a key role in supporting and upskilling existing professionals in the industry. This dual approach ensures that students contribute valuable expertise to the workforce and are recognised as skilled contributors in their workplaces.
The Green Academy’s impact extends beyond student learning. It also offers training and certification for the existing workforce, ensuring that industry professionals are equipped with the latest technologies needed to drive economic growth and meet sustainability goals.
Importantly, environmental learning at Glasgow Kelvin College goes beyond engineering. Students in all disciplines, regardless of their field of study, are introduced to environmental issues and the principles of the circular economy. This broad-based approach helps raise awareness and foster a deeper understanding of sustainability across the college community.
A prime example of the Green Academy’s success can be seen in the Fashion department, which has quickly embraced sustainable design, manufacturing, and commercialisation. Projects in this area have garnered international recognition, with one winning a prestigious International Green Gown Award for Next Generation Learning and Skills in 2024.
By integrating sustainability into both the curriculum and practical training, Glasgow Kelvin College is not only preparing students for the green economy but also shaping the future workforce to be leaders in environmental responsibility.
